As good as last week was for Minco’s teams, this week was at least inversely bad. Minco started the week off against very talented Thomas teams. Monday games are unusual in high school basketball which adds another dimension to what was already a tough prospect.

Minco’s ladies came out against Thomas looking fairly good. They were able to hold their own throughout the first quarter; however, this is when it went downhill. In the second quarter Thomas built an 8-point lead. Through the second half Minco fell even further behind. The Lady Dogs lost to Thomas 64-38.

Hopes were high that Minco’s boys would do better. Though Minco fought hard through the entire game, the Bulldogs were always trying to make up ground. Every time Minco would get within striking distance of the Terriers, Thomas would throw together a run driving themselves just out of the Bulldogs grasp. Minco lost to the Terriers 54-45.

At Central Marlow Friday night the bulldogs were in a do or die situation. Win and they go on; lose and they go home. After getting a tough draw in districts, Minco had to go to Central Marlow and play them on their home turf. Minco came out looking good, though scoring wasn’t as plentiful as it has been, the Bulldogs were playing bang up defense. With less than two minutes in the first half Minco held a 7-point lead. By halftime the Dogs’ lead had dwindled to 2.

Central came out hard in the second quarter and a couple mental errors led the Dogs to face the latter half of the third quarter down by 3. Minco couldn’t find the spark they needed despite their dire circumstances, by the time the Bulldogs got going it was too late. Central Marlow hit free throws down the stretch putting the game out of reach and ending the season for the Minco boys.

Minco’s ladies played Walters on Saturday for the district championship. The game was not an elimination game for either of the teams, just the district championship and momentum going into regionals this weekend. Minco had trouble offensively; they also had a bit of trouble on defense. This led to a 20 point loss for the Lady Dogs to Walters 58-26.

Nevertheless, Minco’s girls will be competing in the regional tournament in Minco this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For the boys, Friday night marked a very disappointing end to a season that had seemingly so much promise. Come out and support the girls Thursday as they try to get through regionals with the backing of their hometown and home-court advantage.
