Minco man dies stranded in blizzard
Saturday, 01.02.2010, 05:45pm (GMT-5)

By Kelly Rupp

A Minco resident missing since noon Dec. 24 was found dead in his car on Dec. 25.

Andrew Grover, 39, of Minco, was located in his car on east Highway 152 just west of Manning Road, according to Union City Police Chief Eddie Dickerson.

“We received a call on the 25th advising of a missing motorist. A joint effort of the Union City Emergency Management, Police and Fire Departments and ODOT was initiated immediately for the search,” Dickerson said.

“The family thought this was his regular route. We had not been able to get out there. When we received information of a possible missing driver we had to try to dig to that. We brought in big loaders to try to dig it out. Grover was discovered inside his car by The Union City Fire Department.

“The car was buried under four feet of snow. They had to use probes to find it. There were 22 cars there,” Dickerson said.

According to a statement issued by Dickerson, the vehicle had approximately 1/4 tank of fuel in it.

“We were notified on Christmas Day between 10:30 and 11:00 at night. Chief Blevins, the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Union City and Chief Dickerson came to the house and told us they had found him in the car buried in snow. [Officer] Robbie Smith had just left the house after taking a missing person’s report,” Lori said.

“The person from the Medical Examiner’s office told me that Andy was one of two people that refused to leave their vehicle. He wanted others to get out first. They all thought they would be able to get back to get him,” Lori said. “He did have the opportunity to leave the vehicle,” Dickerson confirmed.

Blizzard conditions and two multiple-car pile-ups lead to the closing of Highway 152 from Mustang to Union City. The other person was able to make it to a farmhouse 200 yards away to seek shelter, Lori said.

Andrew left the house for work at 4:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve. “I got to kiss him goodbye,” Lori said.

Andrew worked for HCA Consolidated’s medical warehouse on 152nd and Council.

“It was a mandatory work day. He called me on his lunch break like he does every day. I asked him to come home early because of the weather but he told me he couldn’t because it wouldn’t be fair to the others that had to stay. He told me they were starting on the last order so he should be able to leave soon,” Lori said.

A friend saw Andrew on the road heading home between 11:30 and noon. When her husband didn’t make it home, Lori began contacting police departments to report him missing.

“The dispatcher at Mustang told us we were out of luck. We feel disappointed. We don’t think they took us seriously. Lori said.

“He was my soulmate. We were supposed to get old together and sit on the porch in rocking chairs,” Lori said.

A memorial fund to assist the family has been established at Minco’s First National Bank and Trust.
