A Piece of My Mind by Kelly Rupp, Publisher
Sunday, 11.07.2010, 10:52am (GMT-5)

I attended the Minco Town Meeting last Tuesday and I was really impressed with the turnout at the meeting.

I was also happy about the overall tone of the meeting. The attendees were very civil and courteous and they asked good questions.

I also was impressed with the responses by the city officials in attendance. It was a very successful event, I thought.

There was not a quorum of council members present, and I think that was for the best. It’s very easy to get into trouble with the Open Meetings Act.

According to a 1998 Attorney General’s Opinion, “The information contained on the agenda should be reasonably calculated to inform the public of the business to be taken up at the meeting.

“One should be able to ascertain from the agenda description that a particular item of business will be considered. The agenda description must contain enough information to properly notify interested parties that items of specific interest to them will be taken up.” (Op. Atty. Gen. No. 97-98, Feb. 18, 1998)

I honestly had some apprehension about the Question and Answer agenda item since there was no way to know what items might be discussed.

I was very relieved that there was no quorum present because that eliminated any possibility of a violation of the act.

That being said, it was a productive meeting and I was proud of everyone involved. Nice job!

This issue of the Minco Millennium will hit newsstands on Election Day as people are still voting. We won’t know the outcome of the elections until sometime after 7:00 p.m. when the polls close. But no matter who wins, Oklahoma will have many new faces in leadership positions come January 2011.

In the statewide races, we will have a new Governor, a new Lieutenant Governor, a new Attorney General, a new State Superintendent of Public Instruction and a new State Treasurer.

Also on the ballot are State Insurance Commissioner, State Auditor & Inspector and Labor Commissioner.

Elections are about choices. Voting is our right as citizens to make our voice heard. I find it sad that so few exercise their right to vote.

The estimated population for Oklahoma in 2009 was just under 3.7 million people with 75% of those being 18 years or older.

That means approximately 2.7 million people are of voting age, yet Oklahoma only has 2 million registered voters.

Voter turnout is only expected to reach about 50%. If that is the case, that means less than one third of Oklahomans are making the choices for all Oklahomans.

When you consider that a candidate can win with 50% plus 1 of the votes cast, that actually means that one half of one third (or one sixth of the population) is picking who leads our state.

It never ceases to amaze me that people don’t exercise their right to vote.

Our Founding Fathers risked their lives for independence and freedom--and with that the right to vote.

If you are reading this on Tuesday, November 2nd and it is before 7:00 p.m. – if you have not voted, put this paper down, get off your tush and go VOTE.

If you do not vote, you have no right to complain about the government you are dealt.
